Child Custody: Shared vs. Sole Parental Responsibility in Florida

The preferred legal relationship between parents and their children after divorce is referred to as “shared parental responsibility,” in which both parents have the same legal rights to make major decisions regarding their children’s health, education and welfare.

The opposite of shared parental responsibility is sole parental responsibility, which is “a court-ordered relationship in which one parent makes decisions regarding the minor child.”

Sole parental responsibility may be ordered if shared parental responsibility would be detrimental to the child.
